On 4–5 Sep 2026 The Seattle Times Company and Newsday LLC filed a federal copyright (and related) suit against nine OpenAI entities and Microsoft in the Southern District of New York (1:26-cv-07644). The complaint paints generative AI as “a snake eating its own tail” that could leave journalism “broken beyond repair,” alleging bots scraped protected reporting — including paywalled material — to train and operate products such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Bing AI features that reproduce or paraphrase their work and divert readers. TechCrunch notes the case is especially pointed because Microsoft and OpenAI have funded some Seattle Times journalism projects and fellowships. A Microsoft spokesperson told GeekWire the company is “surprised by the lawsuit” but open to talks. Plaintiffs seek damages, injunctive relief and impoundment/destruction of copies, training sets and models incorporating their works — echoing the NYT suit and a widening publisher wave.
