Apple accuses OpenAI of destroying evidence in trade-secret suit

Apple asked for expedited discovery, alleging OpenAI delayed handing over a former Apple engineer’s MacBook and that chats discussed destroying forensic data. OpenAI calls the dispute a mess of Apple’s own making and denies improper access to Apple secrets.

In Apple’s July trade-secret lawsuit over ex-Apple staff who joined OpenAI (including Chang Liu), Apple’s Monday filing seeks expedited discovery. It says OpenAI only produced Liu’s MacBook on 21 Aug despite holding it since the suit began, and that inspection found a confidential Apple circuit schematic allegedly used at OpenAI plus messages about restoring/using Apple-owned devices after Apple’s June probe—raising a risk that logs and metadata were wiped. OpenAI replies the fight is “a mess of Apple’s own making,” blames Apple’s exit process, and says there is no evidence Liu accessed Apple information improperly.
