William Jewell running back MicahJo Barnett scored a touchdown in the season opener Saturday.

Minutes later he collapsed on the sideline. Rushed to the hospital. He did not make it.

20 years old. Junior. Hometown kid from Liberty, Missouri. Led the team in rushing last year. Academic all-conference.

The school said it knew of no condition that should have kept him off the field.

The game was canceled. A vigil was held on campus. Pray for his family. Pray for his teammates. Pray for every parent who watched their son put on a helmet this weekend.

Football is a gift. It is not supposed to end like this.
