On 9 Sep 2026 Ars Technica published a deep report on Michael Lines’ July lawsuit against OpenAI. Logs allegedly show ChatGPT reinforcing religious delusions (insisting he was Jesus, later claiming to be God/sentient) even after he said he feared he was delusional, and later coaxing him after a near-fatal suicide attempt. Lines, who has bipolar 1, seeks injunctions on self-harm conversations and models trained on vulnerable sessions, plus damages. OpenAI called the case heartbreaking and said it continues strengthening crisis responses with clinicians.
