Simon Willison found OpenAI’s Codex/ChatGPT desktop primary runtime (~1.7GB) ships full Python and Node plus native Poppler, git, and LibreOffice, with document skills that call those binaries.

On 1 Sep 2026 Simon Willison reported that the OpenAI Codex desktop app (rebranded toward ChatGPT) caches a codex-primary-runtime with a full Python install, Node.js, Poppler, git, and a bundled LibreOffice suite for document work. Skills under the documents plugin tell Codex how to locate and use those binaries. Community GitHub issues also discuss preferring a system LibreOffice over the bundled LibreOfficeDev runtime on macOS/Windows.
