The Las Vegas Review-Journal published August 21 that Henderson’s City Council, at a special meeting Wednesday August 19, conditionally approved Nexus Charter School and denied Signature Preparatory’s expansion.
Nexus, a new Nevada operator for grades 6–12, got a tentative green light for an east Henderson campus by 2027-28, up to 570 students. Founder David Sabey said a site is not yet secured. Conditions include proof of a federal grant, a revised financial plan through fiscal 2033, and Nevada Department of Education approval of its competency-based program. If conditions are met it would be Henderson’s second city-sponsored charter after Kesher Academy (K-2), which opened this month.
Signature Preparatory’s proposal for a second K-8 campus, aiming for up to 900 students, was denied. A city review team said the application approached but did not meet standards in all five required categories (8 of 25 subcategories). Issues cited: unsecured grant funding, financial discrepancies, and incomplete evidence of demand. The school may resubmit within 30 days. Mayor Michelle Romero said the existing school is good but the process left the review team unable to conclude a second campus would succeed, and she asked for changes to the review process.
