Het verhaal
On 12 Sep 2026 TechCrunch and The Verge covered Sam Altman’s Fortune interview with Alyson Shontell: OpenAI will not IPO in 2026. “We’re not rushing into an IPO,” he said. “I actually think that given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public.” Pressed on the year: “I would say not 2026, yeah. We’ve got a lot of stuff to do.” Timing is “when the business is ready” and “when we feel ready from what the moment is like in society with this technology.” The exchange sat amid Hugging Face–hack fallout and broader safety talk; Altman also said it is “absolutely” possible to build AI beyond human control and vowed to pause training if needed. OpenAI has filed confidentially; the NYT reported in June that bankers aimed at late 2026 but the company was already leaning toward 2027.
