OpenAI pauses new $200 Pro sign-ups as Astra strains capacity

· opgehaald 06:08

Seven days after GPT-6 Astra launch, OpenAI product lead Tibo Sottiaux paused new ChatGPT Pro $200 (Pro 20X) sign-ups/upgrades — heaviest infrastructure load. Existing Pro accounts keep access; $100 Pro, Go, Plus, and API stay open. No reopen date; capacity being added.

On 10 Sep 2026 TechCrunch reported that OpenAI temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan (Pro 20X) after unprecedented demand for GPT-6 Astra strained systems. Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, who leads ChatGPT/Codex products, announced it on X: Pro puts the most strain, so pausing it is the smallest step that keeps broad access; existing $200 accounts are unaffected, and Go, Plus, Pro $100, and the API remain available. He had warned a day earlier that Astra demand was unlike prior steep growth. Astra launched 3 Sep across Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise and the API; OpenAI has not said when $200 Pro sign-ups reopen.
