Las Vegas police and court records released in a Sept. 1 Review-Journal report identify Gregory Lee Turpin Jr., 35, as a four-time convicted felon charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon in the downtown killing of Abraham Berhe. Police said Berhe was walking with a woman on South 8th Street near Hoover Avenue at 12:54 a.m. Thursday when Turpin approached, asked if Berhe was the man who had robbed him of his belongings in an alley, and plunged a knife into Berhe’s chest after the woman said he was not. The stabbing was captured on business surveillance video. Berhe later died at University Medical Center. Metro’s arrest report said Berhe was one of two men stabbed in the downtown corridor that morning. The second victim is expected to survive his injuries; Turpin has not been charged in that crime. Records show prior convictions for battery constituting domestic violence and battery with substantial bodily harm, time in the Nevada Department of Corrections for battery, and prior Las Vegas Valley arrests on suspicion of sex assault, burglary, battery with use of a deadly weapon and possession of narcotics. Turpin was previously booked after the Aug. 27 incident on open murder with a deadly weapon.
