At a Wednesday news conference at Esther’s Kitchen, Mayor Shelley Berkley and Mayor Pro Tem Olivia Diaz announced that Las Vegas is pausing Arts District parking changes that had been set for Oct. 1, days after the new $32 million, 500-space garage at 1421 S. Casino Center Blvd. is due to open Sept. 29. Berkley said the city was “not ready” and needs to “get it right” after feedback from businesses and residents.
The rollback keeps subsidized $10 monthly employee permits for the new garage (instead of the planned jump to $30) through the Charleston Boulevard storm-drain project, expected to finish in early 2028. Street parking north of Charleston stays free for now. The free weekday lunch program (11 a.m.–2 p.m.) continues and will also apply in the garage. Plans to add free parking before 11 a.m. weekdays and paid parking from 10 p.m. to midnight were dropped. Private-lot monthly passes are still set to rise to $50 under existing leases. Officials said they will keep talking with stakeholders and may explore a validation program; more concrete fee plans are unlikely before they see how the garage performs in 2027.
