On 8 Sep 2026 TechCrunch reported a $1.9 billion U.S. Department of Energy loan to NextEra Energy to restart Iowa’s Duane Arnold plant (idle since 2020), targeting 2029 and ~615 MW after upgrades. Google previously pledged to revive the site and is said to be planning up to six nearby data centers; only ~50 MW is reserved for the local co-op. It follows DOE’s earlier ~$1B Three Mile Island restart loan tied to Microsoft’s AI power deals.
