On 4 Sep 2026 The Verge covered the Audacity 4 release: a long-promised overhaul of the open-source audio editor. Biggest workflow change is non-destructive editing — trim then recover by dragging clip edges; clips can overlap and be grouped; a dedicated split tool and refreshed clip envelopes/effects land alongside a home screen and customizable themes aligned with Muse Score / Audio.com. Register notes a Qt rebuild with workspaces; Engadget highlights dark mode and that a classic look remains optional. Audacity 3 projects still open; some 3.x features are not fully parity yet per LWN compatibility notes. Remains free on Windows, macOS and Linux.
